Inkster cards round of 74 after shooting a 71 on her 50th birthday

Cristie Kerr opened up a five-shot lead after the second round of the LPGA Championship thanks to a six-under-par 66. The American had six birdies and no blemishes on her card to shoot the lowest round of the tournament so far in Pittsford, New York. The 33-year-old from Miami now leads the way at 10 under par from Japan's Mika Miyazato and Inbee Park of South Korea, who both managed 70s. Kerr had come into the second women's major of the year in fine form having won the State Farm LPGA Classic two weeks ago. "I had very good recovery shots today," she said, having hit only five of 14 fairways at Locust Hill. "Sometimes you just get up there, 'Oh, I'm in the trees' and you pick a club and hit it. "But I did very good with analysing the lie and how it was going to come out, to dictate what I needed to do with the shot and the club. "I think when I was in the rough I got it on the green and two-putted for par and that keeps your momentum going, even if you are not hitting the fairways."

Hopeful

Park, who shares second place at the halfway stage with Miyazato, insisted she could yet overhaul Kerr's five-stroke lead with two rounds to play. "There's still two days of golf left out there," Park said. "Anything could happen on this golf course. You could shoot a really high score or you could go really low out there." Korean Amy Yang, who shot a 67, and American Brittany Lincicome (70) sit in a tie for fourth place on four under, six shots off the pace. First-round co-leaders Stacy Lewis and Seon Hwa Lee failed to build on their opening efforts on Thursday, dropping to two under following second-round 74s. Defending champion Anna Nordqvist of Sweden signed for a level-par 72 to stand at one-over, while Juli Inkster carded a 74 after a 71 on her 50th birthday. Current world number Ai Miyazato rebounded from a first-round 75 with a second-round 71.
