Chance to play four great courses

Four of Wirral's magnificent coastal golf courses are to again host a 72 hole amateur tournament open to adult male and female golfers. The Wirral Golf Classic will be held on the peninsula from 19 to 23 September after a highly successful inaugural event in 2010. Attracting golfers from all over the UK, Europe and indeed the world, to play and stay in the area, all entrants play a round of golf at each of the four participating courses. Caldy, former venue of the Seniors' Championship, boasts stunning views from its cliffs across the River Dee to Wales. Slightly further down the river, Heswall was the venue for The R&A's Junior Championships in 2006 and stages the North of England Under-16 Championships each year. Wallasey, home of Stableford, is an Open Qualifying venue enjoying beautiful views across the Mersey to Liverpool. And Royal Liverpool (Hoylake) is much loved by golfers throughout the world. It has staged 11 Open Championships, the first Amateur Championship, the first Walker Cup, the first International Golf Match and looks forward to the Ricoh Women's Open in 2012 and The Open Championship in 2014.

Warm welcome

Commenting on the Classic, Nick Peel, 2011 Captain of RLGC, said: "On behalf of the Royal Liverpool Golf Club Championship Committee, I extend a very warm welcome to our special part of the Wirral Peninsula. "Those returning to test themselves against the challenges of our golfing coastline know already what lies in store, and those discovering the charms of the area and appeal of its golf courses for the first time will not be disappointed. "I am delighted that Hoylake is again at the forefront of the Wirral Golf Classic." One of last year's competitors, Elly Ouwerkerk, will be returning with others from the Netherlands and he said: "We would like to let you know that we are thrilled to have applied again for the Wirral Golf Classic. "Last year we enjoyed ourselves very much. All those beautiful courses we were allowed to play. And we have met a lot of nice people. We had dinner in some very nice restaurants in the neighbourhood. Our B&B was really wonderful and we have booked this B&B already in September last year to be sure to have a room in this place again." Nick Brooks-Sykes, Director of Tourism at the Northwest Regional Development Agency (NWDA), said: "England's Golf Coast has world-class appeal and this new competition is the perfect opportunity for golfers to experience some of our best courses. We hope it will encourage more golfers to discover Wirral, and some of its many hidden gems." Flyers are being sent to Golf clubs in March and further information can be found on the web site www.wirralgolfclassic.co.uk including promotional offers from accommodation providers in Wirral. The entrance fee is a value-for-money £219 and that includes 4 games of golf and 2 social events, the Opening Reception at Host Hotel, 4* Thornton Hall, as well as prize-giving at Royal Liverpool. The event is supported by Wirral Council, the Northwest Regional Development Fund (ERDF), England's Golf Coast, National Club Golfer and Titleist.
