Lorenzo Gagli came millimetres away from firing an ace twice on the same hole during the second round of the Rocco Forte Open.

The Italian followed an opening-round 68 with a four-under 67 on Friday at Vendura Golf Club, with one shot in particular standing out from the 31-year-old's round.

Gagli followed birdies at the third and fourth with back-to-back gains around the turn, before cancelling out a blemish at the par-five 12th with a moment of brilliance at the par-three 15th.

The Challenge Tour regular attacked the pin and saw his tee shot rattle the flag but not drop in to the hole, instead landing a couple of feet from the target.

His ball immediately spun back as it hit the putting surface, shaving the edge of the hole before stopping alongside it to leave a certain birdie.

Gagli then completed the closing stretch in level par to head in to the weekend eight strokes adrift of midway pacesetter Alvaro Quiros.
