Mark Calcavecchia carded a 69 to remain in a share of the lead after the second round of the Senior Open Championship.
Having been in a three-way tie at the top of the leaderboard after day one at Walton Heath, the American quickly moved clear of the field with birdies at the first two holes.
But while four more birdies did follow, Calcavecchia also dropped shots at the fifth, ninth and 16th in his three under score at the Surrey course.
"I played well for the most part not too many crooked drives, I'm putting pretty good, not too many mistakes. So far so good," the 51-year-old said.
The 1989 Open champion was eventually joined on a seven-under total by compatriot Lee Rinker and Canadian Rod Spittle, who both signed for 67s.
Peter Fowler of Australia is next on five under, one clear of American duo Mike Goodes and John Cook. Tom Lehman, Mark O'Meara and Tom Watson are all still in the hunt on one under, six shots back of the leading trio.
Meanwhile, Ireland's Mark McNulty and Mike Harwood of New Zealand, who had both shared top spot after the opening round, could only muster scores of 76 and 78 respectively, leaving them well off the pace.
Bernard Langer also struggled on Friday, a double-bogey on the par-four fourth adding to three other dropped shots, though he did stgill manage to make the cut for the weekend.
