Martin Laird escaped a penalty when his ball dropped into a bunker as he prepared for a tough up-and-down, and the Scot then scrambled a superb par

Martin Laird was facing a huge task to get up and down for par on the final day of the Phoenix Open after tugging his tee shot too far left at the short seventh.

Laird's ball caught the bank above the left bunker, and it held in the thick grass when he was hoping it would topple into the sand and leave him a much easier pitch towards the pin.

The big Scot weighed up his options when he stood over the shot, with the biggest challenge facing him being how to take his stance and get enough loft on the ball to get it as close as possible to the hole.

But as he went through his pre-shot routine, Laird decided to take one last glance at the lie - and then saw his ball obligingly fall into the bunker.

Laird consulted the referee and it was agreed he had not caused the ball to move, although he was unable to take advantage of his lucky break as he caught his escape attempt a little thin and left himself 20 feet past the hole.

However, he managed to stay in contention with the leaders when he rattled in a superb putt to salvage a par-three, although his challenge petered out as he was unable to find a single birdie in his disappointing final-round 73.
