Patton Kizzire moved in to a two-shot lead after the opening round of the OHL Classic at Mayakoba, where Rickie Fowler got his PGA Tour season off to an encouraging start.
Kizzire posted six consecutive birdies on his way to a nine-under 62 at El Camaleon Golf Club, with late starter Vaughn Taylor his nearest challenger thanks to a blemish-free 64.
Fowler - making his first appearance since Team USA's Presidents Cup win - lies three strokes back and in a share of third spot with Brandon Harkins, while two-time major champion Retief Goosen is one of six players on five under.
Playing in the first group, Kizzire picked up a shot at the third and posted a birdie at the fifth before-back-to-back gains from the eighth saw him reach the turn in 32.
Four consecutive birdies from the 10th lifted Kizzire four clear and the American extended his advantage with back-to-back gains from the 16th, only to miss out on the course record with a final-hole birdie.
Taylor birdied three of his final four holes to move in to second spot, as Fowler carded six gains in his return to competitive action on his way to a bogey-free 66.
Keith Mitchell fired a hole-in-one on his opening hole of the day to join Goosen, Austin Cook, Martin Piller, Xinjun Zhang and Fabian Gomez four off the pace, with defending champion Pat Perez part of the group a further stroke adrift.
