Tiger Woods rolled back the years to tie for the lead after his second round at the Wyndham Championship in Greensboro, North Carolina.
The 14-time major winner battled back from a three-putt bogey at the first hole to card a five-under-par 65 at Sedgefield Country Club at he battles to secure his place at the FedEx Cup play-offs.
Woods needs to secure at least outright second place at the Wyndham to do so and he finished Friday on 11-under for the tournament to leave him out in front alongside PGA Tour rookie Tom Hoge.
Former world No 1 Woods, who has seen his ranking plummet to 286, played down his efforts after the round, and he admitted he had to work hard to turn in a good performance.
"I wasn't quite as sharp as yesterday and it was tough today. I couldn't quite get the ball below the hole," he told Sky Sports. "I kept hitting my iron shots above the hole and I kept getting these putts where I had to play so defensively.
"I've been close for a while now but haven't put it together for long enough stretches.
"I wasn't getting anything out of my rounds. At the Quicken Loans I was close and had it going for a little bit at times but this has been a lot more consistent."
US Ryder Cup captain Davis Love III and Chad Campbell sit one stroke back in a tie for third, while Brandt Snedeker matched the tournament record with a 61 to join a six-way tie a further shot off the pace.
England's Paul Casey shot 66 for the second successive day to stay in contention heading in to the week, with Australia's Adam Scott seven adrift after a two-under 71.
