Martin Kaymer completed a commanding performance to win the US Open at Pinehurst by eight shots.

Each day ahead of the US Open we'll be taking a look back at the most recent winners of the major. Today it's Martin Kaymer at Pinehurst in 2014.

Kaymer's victory could not have been more contrasting to Justin Rose's triumph a year earlier in the US Open. While the Englishman didn't take the lead until the final day and secured his first major with a score of one-over-par, Kaymer completely dominated the field from start to finish.

An opening-round score of 65 gave him a three-shot lead, and he matched that feat on the second day to set a tournament record of 10 under after 36 holes. The six-stroke lead he held over Brendan Todd in second also equalled the gaps of Tiger Woods and Rory McIlroy at the same stage in 2000 and 2011 respectively.

Kaymer wobbled on the Saturday as he shot a two-over 72, but the chasing pack failed to take advantage as his lead was only reduced by one shot.
