Nick Faldo secured a narrow one-stroke victory to claim his first Major at The Open in 1987.

He finished on five under at Muirfield to become the first Englishman to lift the Claret Jug since Tony Jacklin in 1969.

Faldo did not hold the lead at the end of any of the first three days, but found himself well poised in joint-second going into the Sunday, one stroke behind Paul Azinger of the United States.

And a par round of 71 was all it took for Faldo to claim the win as Azinger faltered after holding a one-shot lead going into the 17th, bogeying the final two holes.

Faldo would go on to secure victories at The Open again in 1990 and 1992, and won six Majors in total thanks to his three Masters titles.
