We rewind to 1977 as Tom Watson shades Jack Nicklaus in the 'Duel in the Sun'

In its first year as an Open course, Turnberry provided one of the all-time classics as legends Tom Watson and Jack Nicklaus went toe-to-toe at the 106th Championship, which would come to be known as the 'Duel in the Sun'.

The pair were level on seven under - three shots clear of the rest of the field - going into the final round in glorious conditions in Scotland, and battled out one of the most memorable rounds of golf ever seen.

It looked to be almost over after four holes of the final day as Nicklaus built up a three-shot lead, but three birdies in the next four from Watson brought them level, before a dropped shot on the ninth gave his opponent the advantage again.

A birdie on the 12th by Nicklaus appeared to end matters, but three birdies in the next five holes turned it right around and gave Watson the lead heading into the 18th.

Nicklaus found himself in trouble, but holed from 35 feet to birdie to give himself a chance, although Watson held his nerve to tap in for victory, closing on a final-round Open record of 65.
