The 37-year-old began the day hoping to become the first Swedish winner of a major championship and two birdies in the first three holes put him bang in contention.
Although his one-under-par round of 70 wasn't enough to catch the clubhouse target of eventual winner Phil Mickelson, Stenson was keen to look on the bright side.
"I'm very pleased with my performance over the week," he said. "And today more so than yesterday. I thought I was in a good frame of mind and played some good golf.
"The key to success and winning tournaments is to move forward and I did that. I didn't let the bogeys set me back and I finished off in good style.
"I managed to keep it together and I've played this golf course very good, I think.
"We're getting closer. I've got two thirds and now a second in the majors."
Stenson believes that it takes experience to win majors.
"It's all about putting yourself in position. The more times you do that, the better the chances of winning are.
"I've learned a lot this week and I'm ready to be back at it next year or at the PGA Championship."
He eventually finished three shots behind Mickelson at level par for the championship and had only admiration for the winner.
"All credit to Phil. We know he's a world-class player and has been for many, many years.
"I don't think his win took us by surprise, but it's still all credit to him for finishing the way he did, and he's a very worthy champion after that finish."
