Jason Day got closer to the Augusta patrons than he intended when a stray shot finished in a bizarre spot during the opening round of the Masters.

Playing alongside Bubba Watson and Henrik Stenson, Day missed the fairway with his opening tee shot, before his second shot sailed right and towards the trees where large crowds were gathered.

Day's shot ricocheted off a tree and towards the patrons, before his ball bounced off an unsuspecting fan's shoulder and into the gentleman's beer!

The patron wasn't injured by the incident and downed his drink by the time Day had reached him to retrieve his ball, with the Australian then firing his third shot to 30 feet and two-putting for bogey.

The former world No 1's fortunes did not improve during his front nine at Augusta National, with three consecutive bogeys from the fifth seeing him reach the turn in 40.
