Bob May is refusing to get carried away despite firing two eagles on his way to a nine-under-par 63 in the first round of the Frys Open in Las Vegas.
A superb back-nine of 30 at The Canyons course provided the backbone to May's round, and this all despite bogeying the opening hole of the day.
Hometown hope May now holds a one-shot lead over fellow American Jason Gore - and he remains relaxed about his chances.
May said: "It's nice to finally get a good round under my belt. Who knows what could happen this week.
"I'm just going to go out and play every day and find out - hopefully something good will happen at the end of it."
May picked up eagles at the third and 15th holes and he puts his early success down to switching to a belly putter.
He explained: "Yeah, it's very radical change, but I've been practising with it for two months.
Confidence
"I just never got the confidence of actually putting it in play.
"I think my wife was going to beat me if I didn't. My wife, my caddie, everybody kept on saying, 'Just try it. Try it. We can tell you want to'. Because I would take it out in practice rounds. It actually does help your normal stroke, too, but, you know, it's so different."
Gore remained in touch with May after picking up 10 birdies at the par-72 Summerlin lay-out, however he blotted his copybook with a double-bogey.
Former US PGA champion Rich Beem joined Cameron Beckman, Jeff Overton and DJ Trahan in a tie for third after a seven-under 63.
For the Brits, Brian Davis' 70 was only good enough for a share of 73rd, while Greg Owen was even further back after a level-par 72 put him joint 111th.
Each player takes on the par-71 Canyons and Summerlin over the first two rounds, before the tournament concentrates on the latter course for the weekend.
