1989 Open champion looking to put seal on memorable season
Mark Calcavecchia admits he will relish the opportunity to be seen as one of the big draws at this week's $4.5 million Ginn Classic in Florida.
The 47-year-old heads to this week's PGA Tour event, the penultimate of the inaugural Fall Series, as one of only two players taking part in the top 50 of the world rankings - Australia's Robert Allenby being the other.
Calcavecchia - winner of the 1989 Open Championship - has enjoyed something of a renaissance this season and currently sits 12th in the PGA money list with career-best earnings of $2,993,332.
He claimed his 13th Tour title back in March when he emerged victorious at the PODS Championship in Tampa Bay and recently finished second behind world number one Tiger Woods at the Tour Championship in Atlanta.
The likes of Woods, Phil Mickelson and Jim Furyk decided to bring the curtain down on their seasons after the Tour Championship - the climax of the first-ever FedEx Cup series.
However, the Fall Series is still ongoing and now having reached its penultimate event there are still plenty of issues regarding next year's playing privileges to be resolved.
Big guns absent
Calcavecchia's sights will be firmly focused on improving an already memorable year and concedes it can be nothing but an advantage to have the game's big guns absent.
"It's nice not to see Tiger and Phil and (Jim) Furyk and Vijay (Singh) and all the same guys every week actually," he stated.
"Kind of exciting showing up knowing that if you play well you don't have to dust off the top 10 in the world to have a chance.
"Winning the PODS (the Tampa Bay Championship) was pretty great for me and set up my year.
"When I said I was going to play the last four, I wanted to win another one of them and turn a great year into a really great year.
"Now I got two left. I'm going to play next week at Disney and I'm looking forward to a couple big weeks - I hope.
"This Fall Series is almost like a mini FedExCup with (the focus on) the money list and some guys are playing great golf under pressure packed situations to keep their cards."
