Bookies favourite and world number five Adam Scott carried on his excellent form from last month's Qatar Masters as he shot 68 to lead the chasing pack after the first round of the Johnnie Walker Classic. Daniel Vancsik, Jason Knutzon and Shamim Khan all enjoyed an impressive first day to lead the way with five-under 67s. Vancsik shot an eagle on the ninth along with three birdies on the back nine, with Khan using his local knowledge of the course to its fullest by converting five birdies in a flawless first round display. However, the leaders will be aware of Scott who looks in fine touch after making four birdies on his first 10 holes to sit just one stroke behind. The Australian is tied for fourth on four under with Mark Foster, James Kamte of South Africa, Greg Chalmers of Australia and Dutchman Robert-Jan Derksen, who all shot early morning 68s.

Vijay threat

Foster flies the England flag after day one after the Worksop-born golfer struck five birdies in an impressive display that sees him rank as the highest placed Briton thus far. World number 11 Vijay Singh is also within striking distance of the leaders after making three birdies on his back nine to finish his opening round on a two-under 70. Meanwhile Colin Montgomerie is at two over after an inconstant day featuring two birdies and four bogeys. Ian Poulter has plenty of work to do on Friday to survive the cut after carding a four-over 76 that featured three double-bogeys.
