Tiger blames performance on poor putting week
Tiger Woods reflected on what might have been as he lamented his poor form with the putter throughout the course of the US Open.
The world number one was never in the hunt for a 15th major title but still finished in a tie for sixth just four shots behind the winner Lucas Glover.
He started nine shots off the lead entering the final round and although he closed with a 69 it was another frustrating day that saw numerous putts slip by.
"I had a lot of work to do. I gave myself a chance going into today," said Woods, who reached one under, three off the pace, with a birdie at 14.
"I had a chance today, I birdied 13, 14, and I hit the best shot I hit all week at 15. I just ended up making bogey there.
"Then I gave myself chances on the last three holes. I gave myself so many chances and made nothing."
The defending champion was pleased with the rest of his game though, and will once again be hot favourite for the Open Championship next month.
"I striped it this week," Woods said about the quality of his ball-striking. "Unfortunately I didn't make anything.
"I hit so many putts...my good ones are not going in and then my bad ones aren't even close.
"It is a little bit slow and bumpy but you have to be committed to hitting it that hard, and I left a lot of putts short. Then when I tried to hit it harder, I gunned it past the hole. I didn't make the adjustment the right way."
