But the three-time major champion, a 28/1 shot in the golf betting, has struggled to find his best form this season and must overhaul favourite Tiger Woods if he is to become the first man since Peter Thompson in 1956 to win his third Claret Jug on the bounce.
Determined
Woods, currently 9/4 in the golf online betting, missed last year's trip to Lancashire's west coast after knee surgery, but the world No.1 is determined in his own bid for a fourth Open Championship title and a third straight win having lifted the famous trophy in 2006 and 2007.
Other contenders bidding to deny Harrington and Woods include Spaniard Sergio Garcia, a 22/1 shot in the golf betting, Lee Westwood (25/1) and Irish wonder kid Rory McIlroy (28/1), while Masters champion Angel Cabrera is 66/1 in the outright market.
