American golfing sensation Jordan Spieth is confident he can win his first major at the US Open this week.

The 20-year-old shared the lead in The Masters going into the final round at Augusta in April and finished as the youngest runner-up in the tournament’s history.

Now Spieth – who won his maiden PGA Tour title last July, taking the John Deere Classic in impressive fashion - is backing himself to go one better at Pinehurst.

He told Sky Sports News: “I believe that I can win this golf tournament.

“I feel comfortable on this golf course – I think it fits my game.

“When I step on the first tee, that’s what I’m trying to do and if I get into contention, I’m going to draw off any experience I’ve had, which now I do have a little experience, so that’s only going to help me.

I feel like I will be able to close this one out if I get an opportunity.

He believes the redeveloped Pinehurst No 2 course will bring great drama this week.

“You’re going to see some recovery shots that are phenomenal and you’re going to see some recovery shots that look like US Open’s of the past where the rough’s four inches, so it’s going to be a variety, it’s going to be very fun.

“It’s going to really take a toll when you miss the fairway because everyone’s going to miss the fairway.”
