Michael Putnam birdied the final hole to take the sole lead at the end of the second round of the OHL Classic at Mayakoba in Mexico.

The world No 195 began the day in seventh place, but a seven-under par-round of 64 took him one shot clear of fellow Americans Shawn Stefani and Jason Bohn at 12 under.

Second round leaderboard

(US unless stated)

-12 M Putnam
-11 S Stefani
-11 J Bohn
-10 K Duke
-9 A Cejka (Ger)
-9 D Hearn (Can)
-9 N Thompson
-9 W MacKenzie

Three birdies in a row on the fourth, fifth and sixth holes set up the round perfectly for Putnam who made the turn in 31.

"We teed off at 6:15am and it was pretty calm," said Putnam, who is seeking his first PGA Tour win.

"The wind was the opposite of what it is usually here so the early holes were downwind and it was pretty easy to start off. Coming back I made a few birdies and got to seven under and a 64.
