Thailand Golf Championship: Marcus Fraser holds lead with Kaymer and Westwood in touch
Saturday 13 December 2014 14:31, UK
Marcus Fraser holds a slender one-shot lead after the third round of the Thailand Golf Championship with Martin Kaymer and Lee Westwood breathing down his neck.
The Australian is playing only his second tournament since returning from a long break due to a wrist injury, but has been among the most consistent players off the tee at the Amata Spring Country Club, firing a two-under (70) on Saturday.
His five-under total of 211 put him one shot ahead of Anirban Lahiri of India, who carded a 68.
"It's only a one-shot lead at the moment, which is almost irrelevant with the calibre of players that are on the leaderboard. So it's just nice to be up there with them," Fraser said.
Conservative approach
The 36-year-old said that he would will be adopting a conservative approach on the final day as he believes the course conditions do not favour aggressive play.
"I just can't do that out there (on taking risk). There are a couple of pins tucked away and ''ve got to keep ball in play and give myself chances on the greens.
"Luckily I'm a fairly decent putter and hopefully I can give myself some chances as the greens are in such good conditions that you can hole some 20 or 30 footers."
German Kaymer (70) and England's Westwood (72) are tied for third along with 23-year-old Tommy Fleetwood another shot back.
Rising English talent Fleetwood led after the second round but only managed a 73.
Kaymer, who is making his first appearance in Thailand, had an inconsistent round with six birdies and four bogeys.
"I had a couple of dropped shots and that was painful, but I think I put myself in a good position," Kaymer said. "If the putter is warm enough then I might have a chance."
