Paul Dunne is through to the US Amateur Championships quarter-finals after a pair of victories.

Dunne secured a place in the tournament after an eye-catching display in the 144th Open at St Andrews last month.

The 22-year-old, who ended in a tie for 30th at the Open, beat Caleb Proveaux 3&2 to advance to the final 16 before a victory by the same margin over David Oraee.

Dunne took control of the Proveaux match early on, winning the second hole, and although his opponent drew level at the fifth, the Irishman was back in front as six and extended his lead at eight and nine.

Proveaux was unable to find a way back into the match as the duo shared the next seven holes, allowing Dunne to take victory.

"I'm just trying to take it one match at a time," Dunne said. "You can only play who's in front of you and play the match in front of you.

"There's a long way to go before the end of the week here, whether it's for me or whoever goes all the way. I'm just happy to get through with two good wins today and looking forward to the challenge of tomorrow."
