Rory McIlroy plays an impressive shot from shallow water on the fifth before sinking a 10-foot putt

Rory McIlroy looked certain to drop at least one shot when he pulled his third into water during the PGA Championship first round, but the world No 1 was determined to salvage a par in stunning style.

McIlroy found trouble off the tee and had to play out sideways from a fairway bunker before tugging a seven-iron into the drink to the left of the green.

But with his ball only partially submerged, the defending champion decided he could "splash out" rather than take a penalty drop - the ultimate risk/reward shot.
