Each day ahead of the US Open we'll be taking a look back at the most recent winners of the major, starting with Justin Rose at Merion in 2013.

Rose had failed to make the cut in three of his previous four appearances at the US Open and a one-over-par score of 71 left him four shots off the pace as Phil Mickelson took an early lead in a a first round that wasn't completed on the Thursday due to rain delays.

Friday was also a difficult day as 68 players failed to complete their rounds due to darkness, but Rose stormed back with an impressive 69 to move to within one shot of the lead. Mickelson struggled with a 72 and shared the lead with compatriot Billy Horschel, who managed a round of 67.

Rose would go one over again during the third round to drop back to two shots off the lead, as Mickelson held par to move out on his own as the leader. He would, however, capitulate on the final day, with two double bogies in the opening five holes opening the door for the chasing pack. The American would eventually shoot a 74 to finish three over.

Rose, meanwhile, managed to hold his nerve as he secured his maiden major title, becoming the first Englishman to win the US Open since Tony Jacklin in 1970.
