In the lead-up to the US Open, each day we'll be taking a look back at the most recent winners of the major. Today it's Dustin Johnson at Oakmont in 2016.

Johnson threw away the chance to win the US Open at Chambers Bay 12 months earlier, but he came back strongly to secure his first major, albeit in controversial circumstances on the final day.

Bad weather impacted on the first couple of days' play, but Johnson led after two rounds as scores of 67 and 69 left him four under, one shot clear of Andrew Landry.

Shane Lowry's magnificent 65 in the third round put him four shots clear of Johnson and Landry, but the Irishman struggled on the Sunday with a 76 to allow Johnson through to secure victory.

The US Open officials informed Dustin Johnson that he might be punished for a moving ball but it wouldn't be reviewed until he finished the 18th

The American initially finished five under but he was penalised a shot after controversially being judged to have moved the ball at the fifth. Johnson had to play the final seven holes without knowing the size of his punishment, but it didn't affect him as he finished three shots clear.
