Dean Burmester ends a difficult day on a spectacular high with a slam dunk eagle-two on the 18th at the US Open, earning approval from Tiger Woods!

Dean Burmester earned respect from Tiger Woods after ending a tough first day of the US Open on a high with a remarkable slam dunk eagle at the final hole.

The South African was struggling at seven over with just one to play at Shinnecock Hills, but he kept a lid on his frustrations and launched his final drive a mammoth 411 yards down the 18th fairway.

Burmester's enormous blow left him a mere flick with a wedge from 111 yards, and he did not have to worry about repairing a pitch-mark as his perfect strike landed straight in the hole for a stunning eagle-two which salvaged a round of 75 and lifted him into a tie for 55th place.

And, as if his shot wasn't good enough, he struck it just as Woods was leaving the 14th tee, and the 14-time major champion gave the major debutant a salute of approval amid raucous cheers from the crowd.

"I was having a long day, so it was a lovely way to finish," said Burmester, winner of the Tshwane Open on the European Tour last year. "That gives me some belief going in the weekend, and being my first US Open, I'm learning and going step by step."
