The Team Sky rider claimed an unprecedented series of results this year, winning Paris-Nice, the Tour de Romandie and Criterium du Dauphine before triumphing in cycling's July showpiece.

Wiggins then rounded off his dream campaign by taking Olympic gold for Team GB in the time trial on home soil at London 2012.

The 32-year-old beat Belgian star Tom Boonen to the prize, which is decided by a poll of cycling journalists.

Boonen also enjoyed a superb season in 2012 as he secured the Tour of Flanders and Paris-Roubaix double for the second time in his career and also won Gent-Wevelgem and E3 Prijs Vlaanderen.

Third in the voting was Joaquim Rodriguez, who finished second at the Giro d'Italia, third at the Vuelta a Espana and won classics Il Lombardia and Fleche Wallonne.

Newly-crowned world champion Philippe Gilbert, winner of last year's award, and Tour de France green jersey winner Peter Sagan were fourth and fifth respectively.
