The Slovakian time-trial champion has been with Omega Pharma-Quick-Step for the last two seasons after spells with the now defunct HTC-Highroad and Milram teams.
Unless another move occurs before the start of next season it will also mark the first time Velits has not been on the same team as his twin brother Martin.
Velits is expected to boost BMC's Grand Tour squads and has a solid past record that includes a third place finish in the 2010 Vuelta a Espana.
"Peter has a deep background in the sport at multiple levels," BMC Racing president and general manager Jim Ochowicz said.
"In particular, he will add power to the team as a skilled time triallist and climbing expert."
Velits said: "Everyone knows that BMC Racing is one of the best teams - not only with the riders, but also the staff and the equipment. So I am really happy that I can join the team for next season."
