Italian punished for doping offence

Davide Rebellin must hand back his Olympic silver medal due to a doping offence. Rebellin, who finished second in the men's road race at the 2008 Beijing Games, tested positive for the banned blood-boosting agent CERA in April. The Italian Olympic Committee (CONI) revealed the International Olympic Committee (IOC) has disqualified Rebellin. "The IOC Disciplinary Commission has disqualified Italian athlete Davide Rebellin from the men's road cycling race at the Olympic Games in Beijing 2008, where he finished second," read a statement on CONI's website (www.coni.it). "The medal awarded in the event noted above will be withdrawn."
