Welshman Chaz Davies enjoyed a World Superbike double at Laguna Seca where Jonathan Rea consolidated his lead at the top of the championship standings.

Pole-setter Davies led from start to finish in both races, while Rea posted two third-place finishes at the California track.

British riders occupied all three podium steps, with Tom Sykes securing second spot in each event. Rea now holds a 125-point lead at the top of the standings with four rounds remaining.

Rea said afterwards: "Two third places represent two good results for my championship hopes and the title is now in sight.”

However, the meeting ended in tragedy with the deaths of two Spanish motorcyclists in one of the support races.

Bernat Martinez, 35, and Daniel Rivas Fernandez, 27, succumbed to their injuries in hospital following a multi-bike accident in the Superstock 1000 race.

The accident happened on the first lap. Martinez was taken by ambulance to the Community Hospital of the Monterey Peninsula while Rivas was flown to Natividad Medical Centre in Salinas.
