Mkoloma and Mentor inspire early pacesetters

Surrey Storm threw down an early marker in the race for honours in the Co-operative Netball Superleague by recording a 50-37 victory over Northern Thunder. Having opened up their campaign with a comprehensive rout over Team Northumbria, Surrey moved top of the table with this 13-goal win in Bury. The Storm blitzed their hosts in the opening quarter to establish an early seven-goal lead. A switch of England star Sara Bayman to centre helped quell the Storm in the second period, with Northern Thunder ensuring the quarter finished level. Thunder continued to compete well but they struggled to break down the Storm defensive pairing of Sonia Mkoloma and Geva Mentor. And at the other end Rachel Dunn and Tamsin Greenway ensured that Surrey were able to build on their lead to secure the victory. However despite the opening wins, Surrey head coach Mary Beardwood is not getting carried away. "It was a tough physical game we're very pleased to get another victory," she said. "The players kept their level of intensity up throughout the hour, and we will be working hard on different combinations between now and the next game."
