World Cup of Pool: England's Karl Boyes and Darren Appleton beat Holland to win final

Last Updated: 28/09/14 9:24pm

England were crowned World Cup of Pool champions for the first time after Karl Boyes and Darren Appleton clinched a dramatic 10-9 win over Holland.

Boyes and Appleton trailed 9-7 against the Dutch duo of Niels Feijen and Nick van den Berg but dramatically won the last three games to clinch the trophy in Portsmouth.

Holland looked to be in control when they took a 6-3 lead but England hit back to level the match at 7-7 when Boyes potted the nine ball from the break.

Holland responded by winning the next two games to move to the brink of victory, but the England duo cleared the table after a dry break by Holland to make it 9-8 and then won the next game to get back on level terms again.

Appleton scratched the cue ball from the break in the decider to let Holland in but Feijen missed when trying to pot the eight ball to throw things wide open again.

Boyes also jawed his shot on the black but lucked out by knocking it safe and next time up Appleton sank it before Boyes completed victory by potting the nine ball.

“I’m in shock really, the match was really, really crazy,” Appleton told Sky Sports.

“There were mistakes from both teams. We couldn’t get anything going but Holland let us off the hook really. They will be sick to lose that because they had a great chance to win.

"But this is why nine-ball is the most exciting game in the world – because you just never know (what is going to happen).”
