The proud Hatter

Luton players deserve support, says actor

British actor Colin Salmon told Soccer AM that he believed Luton Town had performed unbelievably this season, under difficult circumstances. The League Two side were deducted 30 points by the Football League, before a ball had even been kicked, this season because of financial irregularities and exiting administration without a Company Voluntary Arrangement. Manager Mick Harford faced the daunting task of keeping The Hatters in the Football League but, despite a good start to the season, Luton still find themselves rooted to the foot of the table and 15 points from safety. However Salmon, who has starred in three James Bond films as M's Chief of staff, believes his hometown club are still capable of staying up this season, despite the harsh treatment they have received. "It's quite amazing watching what they are doing," he said. "If they hadn't had 30 points taken away from them, they'd be mid-table. "They're showing the mettle of British football teams and I think they're doing really well and I'm really proud of them, but it's just nuts. "I just find the whole thing rather distasteful really," he added. "And actually, Luton has been a club and a town that has suffered since the days of old, from the astro turf arriving, to right-wing MPs who banned supporters, which impacted on our finances and it's literally the make-up of the town. "But the way the players have responded to this scenario has been unbelievable and they should be supported."

Passion

Salmon's passion for Luton extends to football in general and he revealed that nothing quite compared to the emotions he goes through watching the game we all love. "I'm an actor now and you look at Shakespeare and the history of theatre and footballers are the Bards beyond words," he said. "They are not poets of words, they are poets of sport. "And I go there and I come away in tears, and I come away angry, and I come away emotional, and I very rarely do that in the theatre, if I'm being completely honest."
