Sid & Dave honoured

Sky Sports' Sid Waddell and Dave Lanning have been inducted into the darts Hall of Fame.

Last Updated: 10/01/08 4:54pm

Sky Sports commentators Sid Waddell and Dave Lanning have been given one of the biggest awards in darts after both were inducted into the PDC Hall of Fame.

The legendary duo were honoured at the PDC Annual Awards Dinner at the Dorchester Hotel in London on Wednesday night to recognise their contributions to darts in over 30 years of broadcasting.

The pair have become icons among darts fans for their quick wit and humorous rapport and are credited with helping the growth in popularity of the sport since their first broadcasts back in the 1970's.

Speaking to Sky Sports News after the ceremony, Sid was eager to pay tribute to his partner, saying: "With darts commentary it's no good doing it straight - '180, 24, 140'.

"You need a bit of frisson and Dave Lanning is the master of the instant rapport. If I say parity, he says 'sick as a parity'. It's like Morecambe and Wise."

Dave dedicated the award to the Sky Sports darts broadcasting team - and while the award recognises a lifetime contribution, he insisted the duo plan to stay behind the microphone for a long time to come.

He said: "I've got to say that this is also an award for Sky Sports, who have the best team.

"It's a great, great team we work for and it's been an absolute pleasure working for them. We're going from strength to strength, so maybe we'll be going for another 30 years."

Sid and Dave join a select band of darts legends to have been accepted into the Hall of Fame since its conception in January 2005.

Previous inductees include players John Lowe and Eric Bristow, referee Fred Williams, Master of Ceremonies Phil Jones and JR Darts founder John Raby.

Other award winners on Wednesday night included James Wade, Phil Taylor, Mervyn King, Kirk Shepherd, Raymond van Barneveld and Kevin McDine. Click here for full details.
