Austrian skier Anna Fenninger could miss the whole of the forthcoming season after suffering a serious knee injury in a training crash.

The 26-year-old, who has been crowned the overall World Cup champion for the last two seasons, has torn ligaments in her right knee and requires surgery.

Fenninger fell during a giant slalom run on Wednesday and was transported by helicopter to a clinic in nearby Innsbruck.

Austrian team doctor Christian Hoser said: "Anna has seriously damaged ligaments in the right knee, which requires surgery."

The new World Cup season starts in Austria on Saturday with the traditional giant slalom on the Rettenbach glacier, a race in which Fenninger dead-heated for victory with American Mikaela Shiffrin last year.
