History made with second Crucible 147

Ali Carter made the eighth 147 break at the Crucible and the second in two days in his quarter-final clash with Peter Ebdon. A little more than 24 hours after Ronnie O'Sullivan's maximum, Carter matched his feat in going 8-7 ahead against Ebdon. There has never before been two maximums in the same World Championship, although remarkably, it came in the frame immediately after Ebdon had missed his own chance for a 147, missing the 15th black. Carter's break means he and O'Sullivan will share the £157,000 bonus - assuming no other players match their feat before the end of the tournament. The 28-year-old from Essex was even able to steady himself to win a scrappy 16th and final frame of the evening. That gave him a 9-7 lead after three times being the odd frame ahead in the session, only for the former champion to level each time.

Adrenalin rush

Carter said: "It was a real adrenalin rush, especially after seeing Ronnie's yesterday. To get the first of my career here is extra special, it's just brilliant. "I was going for it once I got to 60-odd. I'm really pleased but I've still got a match to win so I had to keep my head in gear and I'm glad I settled in the last frame. "I was just playing on instinct because I was shaking like a leaf. If the balls are there everyone's going to go for it because of the prize money." The first to 13 frames in Wednesday morning's third session will earn a place in the semi-finals. Meanwhile, seven-time former champion Stephen Hendry is two frames away from the last four after moving 11-5 ahead against Ryan Day. The Scot had a chance to win the match in two sessions after opening up a 7-1 lead in the morning, but Day was much more competitive in the evening, sharing the session's eight frames.
