Dirk Nowitzki's 21st NBA campaign has been a season-long farewell tour as the charismatic German winds the clock down on a fabulous career.

Fans across the league have rushed to acclaim the 40-year-old, who helped change the way the game is played as a devastatingly effective distance-shooting big man.

Although no official announcement has been made, it is widely expected that this will be Nowitzki's final season on an NBA floor.

LA Clippers head coach Doc Rivers showed some great class late in his team's 121-112 victory over the Dallas Mavericks by calling a timeout to ensure the Staples Center crowd gave Nowitzki a deserved send-off.

Nowitzki put up a stat line of 12 points, five rebounds, one assist and one block in 26 minutes on court and received a thunderous ovation after the game was stopped.
