The pick and roll is the bread and butter of an NBA team's offence.
It is the most efficient way for an offence to create mismatches on an opponent, to get a big player up against a small, or vice-versa.
At its most basic, the pick and roll sees one player come towards his team-mate with the ball and set a screen to block off the player guarding him.
If it works, the ball handler then has space to attack and either drive to the net or hit his own jump shot, although he can also choose to then pass.
His job done, the screener will then move or roll to the basket to receive a pass from the ball handler. What the ball handler does is down to his split-second decision-making ability in the heat of the action.
