Jess Varnish claimed victory in the 500 metre time-trial as she made a winning start at the British Track Cycling Championships.

Varnish, representing Team V-Sprint Racing, is defending four national titles in Manchester and successfully retained the first of those with a ride of 34.419 seconds in the final heat.

Vicky Williamson finished runner-up after clocking a time of 34.897secs, with Katy Marchant third.

"It's nice to retain a title and the 500 is a really important event because we can see where we are at with standing laps for the team sprint," said Varnish, who took Commonwealth bronze in the time-trial in Glasgow.

"I'm happy with how it went."

The men's kilometre time-trial was won by Scot Callum Skinner, whose time of one minute 01.843 seconds edged Matt Crampton into silver and Matt Rotherham into bronze.

"I wasn't confident at all, Crampo has been doing the kilo every year and Matt Rotherham is an amazing kilo rider and I know I had good form but I wasn't expecting to win," said Skinner.

Jon Gidea won gold in the Para-cycling Pursuit C1-C5 Mixed event, while Lora Turnham and Corrine Hall were victorious in the Para-cycling Tandem Pursuit BVI Mixed event.
