Calls for Sheffield's Don Valley Stadium to be renamed

Former sports minister Richard Caborn has called for Sheffield's Don Valley Stadium to be renamed after Jessica Ennis. Britain's golden girl uses the venue to do her heptathlon training and Caborn, the former MP for Sheffield, believes a name change would help inspire a new generation of athletes. Ennis, who won the heptahlon at London's Olympic Stadium on Sunday, has already had a postbox in her home city painted gold in her honour. Caborn said: "I am calling for the Don Valley Stadium to be renamed the Jessica Ennis Stadium by the local authority as she has spent so much time there. "It would help encourage young people into sport if they link the stadium with such a recognisable figure." Caborn has also called upon the British Olympic Association to recognise Yorkshire's overall contribution to the Games, with at least 10 medallists coming from the area. He added: "I will contact the BOA and ask them for some official recognition of Yorkshire's significant contribution to the British medal success and for the BOA to be supportive of some type of celebration."
