Elise Christie and Charlotte Gilmartin crash out of women's 1,500m short track speed skating

Elise Christie has avoided breaking any bones after crashing on the final bend of her 1,500m short track speed skating semi-final at the Winter Olympics in Pyeongchang.

Christie was stretchered off the ice and taken to hospital for X-rays on her right ankle after coming together with China's Jinyu Li just before the run to the line as the Team GB skater attempted to move into the second qualifying spot.

The Scot, who had also fallen in the 500m final, was taken out by Li's skates and went flying into the barriers. Christie was penalised, while Li was advanced to the final.

More concerning was the sight of Christie having to be treated on the ice for a number of minutes, all happening while race officials were determining who had been at fault for the crash.

Christie had stormed through the field from fifth to second inside a lap, but was quickly overtaken by eventual semi-final winner Minjeong Choi, meaning she had to pass one more rival to secure a spot in the final.

Korean favourite Choi went on to take gold in the final with Li bouncing back from her fall to claim silver, while Canada's Kim Boutin repeated the bronze medal she won in the 500m.

Christie was clearly in tears as she was wheeled off the ice on a stretcher and any possible injury could cast doubt on her competing in her final event, the 1,000m which gets underway on Tuesday.

But concerns of serious injury have been played down by Team GB, with a spokesman saying: "Following the race, Elise Christie was taken to hospital accompanied by the team doctor, team physio and team leader.

"She has had an X-ray on her right ankle which has shown that there are no broken bones.

"Team GB medical staff will continue to assess her over the coming days. Elise wants to thank everyone for their support and the hospital staff who assessed her so quickly."
