First record falls since controversial ban on swimsuit technology

American Ryan Lochte became the first man to break a long-course world record since the ban on performance-enhancing suits when he lowered his own 200 metres individual medley best at the World Championships in Shanghai. The 26-year-old set a new mark of one minute 54.00 seconds to take a 10th of a second off the record he set at the last world championships in Rome two years ago. Lochte, who had already broken world short-course (25m) records last year, beat United States team-mate Michael Phelps into second place for the second time in Shanghai after taking the 200m freestyle title earlier in the week. Lochte became the first swimmer to break a long course world record since the ban on performance-enhancing suits came into effect in January 2010. James Goddard just missed out on a bronze medal by a 10th of a second when he came fourth in the final. The Stockport ITC swimmer finished in one minute 57.79 seconds to be edged out by Hungarian swimmer Laszlo Cseh. Goddard had earlier pulled out of the 200m backstroke heats to concentrate on the medley as he battles an ongoing shoulder injury. Goddard was close to tears and he said: "I'm really disappointed. It was anyone's game for the bronze medal. "The semi-finals kind of showed it was up for grabs and I'm pretty gutted I missed it."
