McCafferty looks to end career on a high note in London
Skipper Lynn McCafferty has no regrets about putting married life on hold to lead Great Britain's women's handball team in london 2012.
The entire squad have been on an emotional and lengthy journey to get to this stage, but none more so than 33-year-old McCafferty who turned her back on married life in pursuit of the Olympic dream.
Living apart from her husband Gary for the last few years has not been easy for the Scot, but she is now within touching distance of the light at the end of the tunnel as she plans to retire after the Games.
Dreamed
"I am really happy and proud. I always knew it would be worth it," she said.
"Of course through the ups and downs it has been hard.
"But once I was told I was going to the Olympics I can't even remember anything that's happened before, it seems like yesterday that I left Scotland.
"But it is 100 per cent worth it and I would do it again if I was asked.
"I never would have dreamed I would have got to this level so I am happy with how it went but I am also going to be happy to go home and live my life.
"My role now will be helping developing handball rather than being on the court, my body is telling me to stop now, it is time to let the kids have a go."
This will not be McCafferty's first taste of Olympic action as she represented GB at the 1995 Youth Olympics in Bath, though she is determined to make the most of the London 2012 experience.
Wiser
"When I was 16 I played for GB in the youth Olympics and we'd only had three months preparation together so that wasn't ideal but this will be different," she added.
"I am older and wiser and know what to take from it and I know what it means to be part of Team GB now.
"I don't think I have had a prouder moment. Sometimes I am a bit of an emotional wreck so I might cry at the first game! But I will be so happy to be there and proud but we have to make sure the team focus.
"I have been captain from the start but to lead the team out is something that I will take great pride in and a job I will make sure I do properly as well."
