New Olympic record for Kazakh weightlifting star

Kazakhstan's Maiya Maneza set a new Olympic record as she struck gold in the women's 63kg weightlifting. Maneza's total of 245kg was a new best for the Games and was 8kg better than her nearest rival, Russia's Svetlana Tsarukaeva. A showdown between the pair had been expected and it was Tsarukaeva who led after the snatch stage - the Russian lifting 112kg to Maneza's 110. However, Maneza was clearly the better lifter in the clean and jerk, clinching the gold medal with her first attempt at 135kg, another Olympic record. Having taken care of business, the champion duly set about trying to break her own world record of 143kg.

Failed

However, twice she failed to lift 144kg. Canada's Christine Girard (236kg) claimed the bronze, making up for her agonising fourth place at the 2008 Olympics. In the day's men's event - the 69kg category - China's Lin Qingfeng proved to be top dog. Lin took the field apart with a total of 344kg, with silver going to Indonesia's Triyatno (333kg) and Romania's 20-year-old Razvan Constantin Martin clinching bronze (332kg).
