Eithiopian legend hoping for London 2012 place after win in Manchester

Haile Gebrselassie is aiming to run the 10,000 metres at London 2012, after winning the Bupa Great Manchester Run. The Eithiopian clocked the fastest time of the year, finishing in 27 minutes 39 seconds to claim his fifth victory in the event. Trials for the African country's team take place in Holland next weekend, and the double Olympic champion is now hoping to be selected to run the distance this summer, after missing out on a place in the marathon. He said: "The top three in Hengelo go to the Olympics, that's what the federation said. At the moment if I get in the top three I go. "According to my training this year, I feel I can run faster on the track. I want to go under 27 minutes. If I run this fast on the road, why not on the track?" On his performance in Manchester, he said: "I am so happy today, everything was perfect. I am not surprised to run that fast. I wanted to run under 27 minutes." Meanwhile, Linet Masai from Kenya won the womens race in 31 minutes 35 seconds. Charlotte Purdue was the first British athlete to cross the line, finishing in fourth, whilst Mara Yamauchi, who will run in the Olympic Marathon, crossed the line in sixth place.
