Star guaranteed at least a bronze at WTF World Championships

British taekwondo star Sarah Stevenson has fought her way into the medals at the WTF World Championships in Korea. The 28-year-old from Doncaster is guaranteed at least a bronze medal having made it through to the semi-finals of the under-67kgs division. Stevenson will now face home favourite Hwang Kyung-seon, the current world and Olympic champion, on Monday for a chance to compete for gold. She has continued to produce on the mat despite difficulties in her personal life, with her mother Diane having been diagnosed with terminal cancer while father Roy has a brain tumour. She said: "Any pain I am going through here is nothing compared to what they are suffering, so I didn't want to come away without a medal.

Hard

"It is going to be hard, but I'm going to come back tomorrow refreshed and ready to go." Great Britain performance director Gary Hall paid tribute to the courage of Stevenson, who also collected bronze at the Beijing Olympics having been re-instated following an appeal against the judges' decision. She said: "There is no-one out there who is better than her, or who she is afraid of. Sarah has a huge chance. "Sarah sees these World Championships as a stepping stone to London and an Olympic gold medal." As well as Stevenson's gold medal chance on Monday, Team GB will also see teenage 2012 hopeful Jade Jones in action at under-57kg, as well as Martin Stamper, who has claimed titles in the United States and German Open this year at under-68kgs. However, world number one Aaron Cook suffered a frustrating first round defeat to American Luke Ford in the men's under-80kg class. Elsewhere, Barnsley fighter Caroline Fisher made it through to the last 16 of the under-53kgs, before losing to Turkey's Hatice Yangin.
