Brits facing tough tests in Sunday's team competition
United States fencers dominated the Olympic foil test event at London's ExCeL arena, with Gerek Meinhardt beating Miles Chamley-Watson 15-5 in the final and their team-mate Race Imboden also reaching the last four.
World number 30 Meinhardt had earlier overcome British number one Richard Kruse 15-10 in the quarter-finals.
Kruse was the only one of the eight-strong home contingent to make it through two rounds.
The 28-year-old Londoner, ranked 22nd in the world, defeated Italian Martino Minuto 15-6 and America's 17-year-old world number 16 Alexander Massialas 15-10.
Ed Jefferies had a brilliant 15-5 first-round victory over Italian Luca Simoncelli, at 14th in the rankings almost 100 places ahead of him, but then went out 15-10 to Russian Dmitriy Rigine.
British number two Laurence Halsted, whose parents were both Olympic fencers, lost 15-12 to Chamley-Watson, while Marcus Mepstead just missed out on claiming a notable scalp.
Ranked only 186th, Mepstead tied 11-11 with Russian's world number nine Alexey Cheremisinov, but lost in extra time.
The event concludes with a team competition on Sunday. Britain supply two of the eight sides, but their number one outfit take on second seeds China in the first round and the second string squad are up against top seeds Italy.
