Youngster secures third medal with bronze at backstroke

Hannah Russell secured her third Paralympic Games medal with bronze in the S12 100m backstroke at the Aquatics Centre. Russell, the second youngest British medallist after only turning 16 last month, was the fastest into the final and she was in contention for the lead on the first length. However Oxana Savchenko pulled away on the second 50 to touch in a new world record with Russell just touched out for silver in one minute, 10.15 seconds.

Pleased

Russell said: "My legs were burning on the last 25 and I knew I just had to keep going and give it my absolute all. I was really pleased with it. "I never thought I could ever get medals at such a young age in such a good, strong category. To come here and medal is a bonus for me." British swimmers secured two more medals in the SB6 100 metres backstroke but could not quite get to winner Viktoria Savtsova of Ukraine. Savtsova was holding on for dear life at the end of the race with Charlotte Henshaw just 0.03 seconds behind in second with Liz Johnson claiming the bronze.
