Wakefield Trinity produced one of the biggest upsets in the history of the Super League play-offs as they sealed a huge 33-6 victory against Wigan Warriors to advance to their first-ever Grand Final.

League Leaders Shield winners Wigan had not lost in their last 16 games across all competitions, and were hot favourites to advance to their third-straight Super League Grand Final, but they were left stunned by a ferocious Wakefield team, who, had been playing their rugby in the Championship two years ago.

After a cagey first half, the visitors capitalised on what would be a costly second-half sin bin for Warriors playmaker Adam Keighan, running in a trio of tries from Tom Johnstone, Jack Sinfield and Corey Hall inside seven minutes as they romped their way to a 27-point victory.

They will take on Warrington Wolves in the Super League Grand Final at Old Trafford next Saturday.

"I thought we were superb today," Wakefield head coach Daryl Powell said. "We completed at 100 per cent in the second half, 94 per centin the first half. We made one error all game.

"Wigan are excellent, and they've had an unbelievable season, but I thought we were unbelievable tonight. We started a little bit shaky but once we got our teeth into the game

"It's a special group of boys and we've got an amazing opportunity next week now."

The first half was a cagey affair, with both sides matching each other's intensity, but it would be Wigan who would take the advantage first after Trinity's Jazz Tevaga was sent to the sin bin for a trip on Liam Marshall.

Brad O'Neill made the visitors pay, bulldozing his way over, but Wakefield hit back through Johnstone, who finished off a superb move in the corner.

Wigan lacked discipline at times, and a penalty right in front of the posts for a ruck infringement saw Trinity take a two-point advantage heading into the break.

The second half continued with the same intensity, with neither side able to pull away.

But a tip-tackle from Keighran on Isaiah Vagana proved a decisive moment, with the Warriors five-eighth being shown a yellow card.

Wakefield immediately attacked, with Johnstone capitalising on a mismatched defence, crossing over in the corner with another sensational finish, before Sinfield bulldozed his way past Julian Nsemba for another try moments later.

Powell's side had a third within seven minutes of Keighran's sin bin, with Hall flying down the wing before crossing the finish line.

Jake Trueman was brilliant throughout the match, and popped off a lovely offload to Ky Rodwell, who crashed over for the final try of the match.

"They had to be very good to punish us when we lost Adam [Keighran]," Wigan Warriors head coach Matty Peet said on Keighran's sin bin.

"No way is this game about that. We were well beaten. Wakefield deserve it. We were well prepared, we were motivated but they were too good.

"I can see why it was given, there's always opinions, but this game's not about that."

"Credit to Wakefield, it hurts, but the night belongs to them."
