Sam Twiston-Davies had to settle for second place on Southport on his comeback from injury at Ffos Las.

Paul Nicholls' stable jockey had to give way to Charlie Deutsch on Super Sam in the Finings Handicap Hurdle.

Twiston-Davies teamed up with his father, Nigel, on his only ride of the day after being sidelined for seven and a half weeks with a damaged spleen.

He settled Southport in midfield as Time For Champers set the pace until Super Sam went on before the third last.

Twiston-Davies did his best to cover the move but Super Sam (10-11 favourite), trained by Venetia Williams, was too strong and went on to get the verdict by a length and a half to follow up his victory at Hereford a week ago.

"I'm not blowing so that's good. To be fair I had a great ride. He was perfect for a first ride back," Twiston-Davies told At The Races.

"He jumped, he travelled. I had to push him a little bit, but at the same time I felt comfortable doing so."
