Barzalona swoops on Territories to win Prix Jean Prat at Chantilly

Territories came from last to first to take the Prix Jean Prat from Jersey Stakes winner Dutch Connection.

The Group One contest was run at an unusually serious pace, with Full Mast going to the front from the stalls only to be taken on by the freegoing Aktabantay, who pulled his way to the lead at an unsustainable pace.

Mickael Barzalona was meanwhile happy to drop his mount right out and turning for home, Territories, second to Gleneagles in the 2000 Guineas at Newmarket, was still stone last of the eight-strong field.

But as Full Mast quickly backpedalled, Barzalona switched his mount outside to give chase to new leader Dutch Connection, another to benefit from a sensible waiting ride from Jim Crowley.

Dutch Connection was a couple of lengths with 150 yards to run, but Territories always looked to have the matter in hand and cruised past to score by half a length with something in hand. He paid 13/10 on the Pari-Mutuel and 6/4 with British bookmakers.

Full Mast, who had behaved badly on the way to post and again behind the starting stalls, was eased right down in the final stages.

Clive Cox's Kodi Bear, who raced too freely in the early stages, was a respectable fourth.

"Mickael rode a cool race and did not panic. Territories was a bit further back than we wanted but the leaders went very fast.

"He will remain at a mile and might go for the Deauville race (Prix Jacques le Marois on August 16)."

Speaking on the Godolphin website, Barzalona added: "The leaders have gone very quickly.

"I was soon some way last, but Territories is very good and showed tremendous acceleration."
